Lee Johnston signs for Oxford Tag Triumph
Lee will ride the Oxford Tag Triumph Daytona 675 in the sixth round of the British Supersport Championship this weekend at Knockhill, Fife.
The likeable 21-year-old from Maguiresbridge, Northern Ireland will be deputising for the injured Paul Young who suffered multiple fractures to his right leg in a freak qualifying accident at Cadwell Park in May.
Lee might be a stranger to the unique character of the Triumph triple, but he’s no stranger to success having won the Superstock 600 Championship in 2008, taking no less than 10 podium finishes from 12 starts.
Last year, Lee was regularly inside the top five in British Supersport with Raceways Yamaha before a broken ankle cut his season short.
For 2010 Lee started the season with the Gearlink Kawasaki team but despite finishing inside the top ten, Lee struggled to find the kind of form and pace that he felt he was capable of, so by mutual agreement has parted company with the team.
“I’d like to thank everyone at Gearlink Kawasaki for being so understanding, but I knew it was best for everyone involved if I moved on. While Chris and Ben can get the best from the Kawasaki, it seems it’s just not for me.
Now I’m very excited about the challenge of riding for a new team on a new type of machine and I really can’t wait to get to Knockhill. I know the team build an excellent bike and I’ve seen first hand how well Paul Young was going on the Triumph earlier in the year.
I’m upset for him to have suffered such a bad injury, but it’s offered me a great opportunity and I intend to make the best of it.”
Rob Winfield, Oxford Tag Triumph team owner commented:
“Bringing Lee into the team should give us all a boost. He’s a quality rider and he’s as determined as we are to succeed at this level. It was quite a late decision, as obviously we wanted to keep all our options open of which there were several – indeed it was rather flattering that so many riders wanted to be on our bike. We’re confident that Lee can fulfil his potential on the Triumph Daytona 675 and we’re looking forward to working with him this weekend. We know that it’s a tall order with no time to test before first free practice, but we’ll be doing all we can to help Lee adjust to the special character of the Daytona.”
